It is necessary in space combat to know which ships to shoot and launch missiles at. Since your opponents may be flying the same model of ship as one of your allies, everyone needs to have a unique signature, or 'call-sign' so everyone knows who is whom.

The idea is that as you target a suspect ship, your instruments will identify the pilot the ship belongs to. The pilot's call-sign will appear above the ship.

Before you go into battle for the first time, you'll be presented with this array of call-signs. Just move the joystick till the flashing cross is over the call-sign you want and pull the trigger to take it. If nothing happens when you pull the trigger, the call-sign is probably already taken by another pilot (it'll flash blue and yellow if it is). Choose another.

If you and your pilot friend wish to play as a team, you may choose the green or red square in the middle and allow the computer to automatically choose team call-signs such as Red One and Red Two. Your HUD, TADS and radar will clearly indicate which ship out there is your ally.

Be quick about choosing your call-sign. The game is timed from the moment this screen comes up.
