Radar

Pretty picture of RAD MFD

The 3D radar is the most useful bits of instrumentation anyone could have on a spaceship. Use it to quickly locate your enemies and to find whose missiles are going where.

Your ship is the little blob in the centre of the scope. The pie-slice extending forward from there represents your cone of vision; anything you see there is likely to be visible from your cockpit also.

Other ships are marked as blobs, missiles and triangles. Missiles fired at you are shown as up-side-down triangles. A square indicates the target you have chosen with the 'Target Select' button. If you are playing in teams a diamond will be drawn around your ally.

A 'stalk' is drawn from each blob to show its height from an imaginary plane extending 'horizontally' from your ship. Looking at the radar above, you can see that two of the ships and the two missiles are all 'below' you. The other ship (selected as a target) is about 15 degrees to starboard and a similar angle above the horizon. This 'horizon' is always fixed to the plane of your ship, and 'up' is wherever the top of your head is pointing.

If you find the radar too crowded near the centre, zoom in by pushing the button labelled 'IN'. If interesting things keep falling off the edge of the scope, push the 'OUT' button instead.

At the very top of the screen is a 'proximity' scope (a one-dimensional radar) that enables you to use the ECM button against missiles within range whilst keeping the main scope free for long range tracking. In the Bad Old Days, pilots had to use two MFDs for the radar: one at short range, the other at long range.
