nasty and insidious piece of work.

- Videohelp.com's DVD hacks
– See if you can fix your unlawfully restrictive DVD player. The zone restriction is
unlawful in NZ because the restriction is not to prevent copyright infringement but to
implement a technological trade barrier against parallel importing. Trade barriers like this
are expressly forbidden under NZ law because they amount to price-fixing.
Most reputable retailers in NZ will either disable the zone restriction for you or
give you at the time of sale instructions on how do fix the player yourself. Being
able to change the zone setting of your DVD player at will means you'll be able to
play any DVD you buy from anywhere, even those tricky DVDs that detect and refuse to
play on de-zoned players.
- The DVD Firmware Flash page
– For some reason, the regulations against technological trade barriers are
not enforced for computer DVD drives, even though the restrictions are just as illegal.
This firmware hack page may help. If not, the
VLC Media Player is worth a try.
VLC completely bypasses DVD zone restrictions.
